When I made my 1999 jump I had enough cash to get all the way up to 2800 infrastructure. Tech deals and back collecting are where it's at. Plus having a job but not enough stuff to spend money on (donations!) helps too.

As a selfish jerk, I don't really think I'd donate to anybody other than myself, so this is theoretical.
