Title: Life never ceases to make me laugh.
Post by: wethepeople on March 17, 2008, 09:21:20 pm
So, I get a brand new computer. I build it, I love it. All my games work. I finally got rid of the constant barrage of security questions and updates. I have all my temperature programs running. All the fans are at speed. Its PERFECT. See TL;DR version below wall of text here:

Except one thing. "But one thing? Not so bad!" Its my favorite game, and the one game I was most excited to play. S.T.A.L.K.E.R does NOT work on Vista. I'm tired of trying to fix it. Stalker reads 1GB of RAM on Vista Its programmed to crap out/it starts crashing into the hard drive when it gets over 1GB. Thing is, I have 2GB. And so do most Vista users. This bug does not happen in XP. So it only reads half my RAM, but the textures are valued to use up to 1.5GB since I have 2GB. Long story short its programmed to use 1.5GB but can't read more then 1.0GB, which results in VIOLENT crashes. And I can't turn the settings up as high as I could, so it ends up looking like it did on my OLD computer. And it still crashes because of other technical problems. And I simply cannot install mods otherwise it crashes no matter what I do.

tl;dr The one thing that doesn't work is my favorite game. ^_^

XP>Vista

So here's what you do: buy another GB of RAM.  Then it'll read 1.5 and run, correct?  It's not that expensive and it's worth being able to play your favorite game.

Not that simple. With Vista, its programmed to only read 1.0GB unless I download some /bin tweaks, which I DON'T feel like doing. But with the visuals of DX10 and hardware factored in, with Vista it will use 1.5GB. Thus over the limit of the game. No way around it besides for seriously annoying back doors and tweaks.

But I'm sure they'll fix the bug soon and also soon all games will be released solely for Vista.  >_>

Glad I have 3GB of RAM.

I think when looking at system requirements with Vista, you basically subtract a gig from your system for comparison.

i.e. you have 2GBs pretend you have 1GB for the sake of system requirements.

Fortunately for me (a vista user), the largest two games I have for it are Civilization 4 and Halo, neither of which is overly large, so they both work perfectly (although I have to lower the graphics settings on them since I'm using a laptop).

You went with Vista? Bad idea. IIRC, Microsoft released Service Pack 3 for XP. Which made Vista pointless. Think of Vista as the new Windows ME.
