Yeah your postition on the map doesn't mean anything. It's only there for show.

You can't see other nations on the map anymore.  It got to crowded.

Actually, where you build your nation does matter. If you build it in Israel, you get a special small happiness bonus if your religion is Jewish.

i was in israel and I was jewish for a long time...then I lost trades and had to change to jainism...an odd match for the holy land.
