Asus is a great company, and they have great warranties. Trust me, you want a good warranty. Your Mac will have a shit warranty, and will become shit after 1 year.

Depends on what you are doing for it.
Go Lenovo.

My 3-year-old MacBook Pro is still going strong and does everything I need, thanks to being able to boot either Mac or Windows.

Fuck macs. If you are that worried about stability, run Linux.

Any reason why you hate Macs or are you yet another person who hates them because they're either:
a. different
b. "trendy" and "cool"

They can't run about 3/4 of the software I need for work. I have been forced to use mac's in the past, and am amazed I managed to not slit my wrist trying to navigate their system. Admitted, I have not run Windows on a Mac, but that is just the clash of two ultimate evils. Running Windows on a Mac is like cutting an extra slot to use a Phillips head screwdriver.
I have a Toshiba Satellite that I beat the piss out of and never had any trouble.

Fucking Ubuntu ftw
-
I've got a Lenovo Thinkpad and I've never had any seriouse irreversible problems with it and it still works fine.

Go for ANYTHING but the Mac. Macs are pricey, close-sourced machines of evil that's only redeeming factor is that there are few viruses for 'em cuz nobody uses 'em.
You should grab the Lenovo and run a Gentoo installation on it (dual-booting to Windows if ABSOLUTELY nessecary...).
One of the things I love about my university: They have their own customized Linux distro free for any students interested.
