Title: So I went to the doctor last week for the first time since...
Post by: rlrcstrnthusiast on March 21, 2013, 01:44:10 pm
...I was 14. Reason I haven't is because I wanted to punch said doctor in the face. Anyway, my parents put me back on their health insurance until I'm 26 since I got demoted, lost my full time and, consequently, my health insurance. They kept pestering me to at least get a physical before November when I lose it again. So I go. Whatever. It's only $15. Get in there, they tell me I'm fine, but I need to lose 15 pounds.

wat.

The last time I was 175, I got super sick until I put some weight back on. I've put on a lot of muscle since that point, too, and it wasn't like I was a slouch there, either. By my calculations, if I lose the 15 pounds he said I need to lose of ONLY fat, I'll be at 1% body fat.

Go fuck yourself, Doc.

*goes to check how much 15 pounds is*

Oh.

It's 6.8kg. You're about the same weight as me and I think my doctor would be more likely to tell me to put on 6.8kg.

5'11". Everyone I know who I tell this says "Lose 15 pounds from WHERE?" If I drop water weight, I can make 175 easy. Otherwise, I need to also drop muscle and/or a limb.

Well if you feel comfortable and your friends agree that Dr. can take their opinion and shove it where the sun don't shine.  I'm 5'10 and I feel most comfortable around 170 lb.

People who actually think BMI is the be all, end all will tell you that excess weight is bad for you, whether it is muscle for fat.

They did a study several years ago on NFL players and said that some ridiculous number (don't recall exactly) were obese.  Now lineman, sure.  But the one I always remember was Joey Porter, who is 6'4", 250 lbs and 4% body fat.  Their defense to him being included "there is no proof that being overweight because of muscle is not unhealthy"

People seem to take rules of thumb way to seriously.  They look at them as absolutes and cannot see beyond them.  BMI is a good estimate, but that's about it.

Of course there is always the other side of the coin which is people not taking them serious enough and always thinking they are the exception.  "I'm not fat, I'm big boned" or other such ignorance.

I remember when I was in the National Guard, there was a body builder who was going to get demoted from Sergeant because he weighed too much for his height.  Not an ounce of fat on the guy but according to the army, he was a fat ass.

Someone once told me you could get an exemption from the weight restriction if you were under 10% body fat.  Don't recall which branch.  But he also said no one that ever tried to get it ever did.
