i want to know what you guys think of this system
amd athlon x2 5000+
2 gig ddr ram
500 gb HDD
19 in 16:9 HD screen
nvidia 6150 256 megs memory HD graphics card
so good or bad you all think? and is it worth another $140 to go to 3 gigs of ram?
EDIT: frogot it was a HD graphics card
-
Price and the graphics card sucks.
-
True, the price is crazy.
You can do so much better than $140 for an extra gig of ram. What are the ones you're buying, made out of gold????
My laptop has comparable specs (though better graphics card), and it's cheaper to upgrade X_X
-
shitty >_>
-
my parents want a warenty and to get that we have to get them to upgrade the ram X_X
hmm, any recomended graphics cards?
-
build your own! nearly every part has a 3 year warranty. and you can make it much better than that. how much would you be paying for that?
-
Keep on shopping around.
You can find some amazing deals.
-
with the monitor it would cost $670
-
i just got this system but with a nvidia geforce 8600
-
you bought it, then?
-
ya
but it has teh 8600
-
ox.
A Samsung 226w (Best monitor made. and thats 22') costs only $300.
6150 is not an HD card, lol.
$140 for another gig!? Good god man.
-
ok here is what it has (wethepeople this is for you)
AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 dual-core processor 5000+
2GB PC2-5300 DDR2 memory
nvidia 8600 256 ddr3 ram
15-1 memory card slot
hd tv tuner
720i 19" HD monitor
16XDVD±RW/CD-RW
rca cable in (to plug in a game system)
6 usb 2.0 ports
500GB Serial ATA II hard drive with 16MB cache
s-video in
media remote
2 firewire ports
10/100 Mbps Ethernet LAN with RJ-45 connector; V.92 high-speed data/fax modem
nice computer
-
also it's $140 for the gig because its under warenty so i have to get the stick from bestbuy (100) and have them install it (40) but they have sales every so often and then i can get a gig for 70 installed so i'll go to 4 gigs then
-
ouch... $40 to install a stick of memory... it's not THAT difficult...
-
i know
fucking geek squad
-
Geek squad sucks ass. They couldn't install a PCI card. You know why? Motherboard was effing AGP. Douchebags know nothing.
It takes about 1.5 seconds to install ram. Its literally plug and play.
-
true
but my dad who paid for it wanted warenty so he gets warenty
-
Reading this topic is like reading German.
I have no idea what you guys are talking about. I know so little about technology.
-
lawl @ C-zom
All motherboards (recent ones at least...and all older ones even have a PCI-like slot) have PCI slots whether their main video graphics port is PCI-Express or AGP.
-
in lang that flask can understand:
we can play halo 2 online now (windows live > xbox live)
-
*PCI-E
>_> Sorry. Not my comp anyway, my sisters.
-
Well, lawl @ Geek Squad then.
<_<
-
geek squad = my mortal enemy!
-
Go to Circuit city and go to Firedog. If you want something done right they can do it. Its more expensive but they actually know what they're doing. Geeksquad are a bunch of greasy douchebags who got in cause they know what GB stands for.
-
^^ heh
so true
but if they cant fix it they just have to give us a new one
-
<_< It took me a while to figure out which GB you were talking about.
lulz
I couldn't figure whether you meant gigabyte or some other thing of which I have no knowledge or no remembrance.
-
hm, sounds like i'm more than qualified to work at geek squad (i need a job anyway).
how much do they pay?
-
also it's $140 for the gig because its under warenty so i have to get the stick from bestbuy (100) and have them install it (40) but they have sales every so often and then i can get a gig for 70 installed so i'll go to 4 gigs then
ok, I looked on-line
Crucial DDR2-5300 1GB stick (http://www.crucial.com/store/partspecs.aspx?IMODULE=CT12864AA667)
Cost is under $40
Does opening the PC and installing the memory yourself void the warranty? Memory from Crucial has a lifetime warranty, so you don't have to worry about the memory.
Also, if you're on a 32-bit operating system, don't bother going past 3GB. The PC won't be able to use all of the last 4GB, So you'll end up with like 3.5GB.
Otherwise that computer should serve you well for many, many years.
-
it comes with vista prof so it is 64 bit
i can go up to 8 gigs of ram
and yes, putting in the memory me self would void it X_X if not i would have 4 2 gig sticks on the way to mah house now
-
Just because you have Vista Home Premium doesnt mean its 64 bit.
The lack of knowledge in this topic scares the ever loving shit out of me.
EDIT: I was thinking about XP professional for some odd reason.
-
lol, there isn't even a "vista professional"
-
well that matters not, I'm not even sure what one we got at this point
mah brain hurts
-
I have no idea what anyone in this whole thread said.
-
summary: people say mah computer and geek squad suck, then i get better one.
also it is home premium 32 bit for those who care
-
Listen, if you need more than 3GB's in the first place then you're crazy. I use 3GB and I don't /want/ any more. @_@ Let alone being able to use it.
-
i would only go past 3 gigs if it was 1. required for max settings on a game i wanted
2. really fucking cheep
also with 2 gigs and an 8600 i can run anything out now (bioshock on top settings )
-
=D Nice!
-
ya,
it's the only game so far that my card was worth getting for, mostley it will be good in 6 months to 4 years
-
an 8600 in four years? sorry... my 6600 lasted 2 years before it was unbearable. i was going to replace it. then it exploded! so i bought my current card.
-
My x1600 pro has lasted me a year. Its starting to show its age, but nothing ATitool can't fix. >_>;
-
but you all froget the most important part, when these graphics cards came out, many programs used their main cirect x, and that would be 9 but this card does direct x 10 and the only game at this point that CAN not even needs it is bioshock
-
A few other games use Direct x 10 right now. I think company of heros and a few others.
Also all computer games are being made for Direct x 10 cards now. Well I think anyway.
-
Save some sequels and expansion packs Crazy is right.
-
they are being made that they CAN use it, none need it yet
-
that doesn't mean an 8600 will last the lifespan of directx 10. if that were the case, my old radeon 9600 (one of the first generation of dx9 cards) would have been perfect until this january (when dx10 was released).
-
well thats still like a couple of years
-
I'm sorry but.. cry more. I have a x1600 pro. The freaking 8600 A eats it alive and B will live for a long time.
-
an 8600 is at this time the best card on this planet for pci-e (not counting dual cards)
the 8800 is more powerful but, it has worse susport for the high def formats (720,1080 and hd dvd asnd blue ray) so as far as i care its the best there is
-
The 8800GTX and Ultra kick its ass.
>_> Sorry, Vector. But the 8600 still eats my card alive.
-
they really arent better, i spent 2 hours deciding and chose the 8600
-

yes, the 8800 ultra is the best card on the market. then the gtx. then an ati hd 2900xt.
and did you say i was crying? im just trying to talk sense into him. a mid-range card like the 8600 will not last several years! i thought the same thing about my radeon 9600 back in 2002 (i think i replaced it when san andreas got unbearable), then i thought that about my geforce 6600 in 2004 (which was going to get replaced because of oblivion, but ended up dying when my motherboard decided to kill half my components). and i dont even expect my high-end radeon x1900xtx from 2006 to last several years either before the new games start stuttering.
-
1900 high end? wtf?
-
yes. an x1900xtx is high end. and if you look at benchmarks, way better than an 8600. general rule for how they name these things:
first digit is the generation
second digit is its "ranking" within the generation
last 2 digits will either be 00 or 50. 50 means it has had a slight upgrade.
benchmarks: http://www23.tomshardware.com/graphics_200...4&chart=318 (http://www23.tomshardware.com/graphics_2007.html?modelx=33&model1=727&model2=854&chart=318)
-
sorry im stupid, did the same thing but, put in x1600xtx insted of 1900
yours is better for benchmarks
-
yeah. i'd like the hd stuff though. it's capable of outputting hd signal but it has no hdcp. so if/when i get a fancy super-expensive lcd tv, i won't be able to use bluray/hddvd properly. and dx10 would be nice, but it's not urgent right now. i can probably sit out this generation of graphics cards then get a new one one and a half generations from now with whatever new things they have then. in fact, i'll probably get an entirely new computer by then. hopefully a laptop. and by then maybe uf will have installed campus-wide wifi!
*walks off muttering about uf's horrible wifi coverage*
-
heh, i love having the hi def out put and blue ray/ hd dvd stuff, because my comp has a hi def input (xbox )
-
The 1900 is the next card I'm buying. Its insanely fast, blows away the 1950's for whatever reason and is a hundred dollars cheaper than the 1950's. Go figure.
-
they're hard to find nowadays, unfortunately. if i had $300 or so to spend on computer parts, i think i'd get a crossfire motherboard and a second x1900, if i could find them anywhere.
