Anime / Are 4Kids and Disney a Danger to Anime?
« on: October 26, 2009, 09:44:56 pm »

Now, we've all known that 4Kids has bought the license for a handful of animes in the past. And due to their target audiences being kids, they have really buffered what was once great animes to have appropriate details for kids...which is pretty much cut out anything that even involved throwing a punch or showing blood.
Yes, 4Kids is a menace to the anime industry. Who could forget their dub of Pokemon, or their abominable One Piece dub?

And now, it seems Disney has bought the rights to air Naruto: Shippudden and will air it on Diosney XD. Knowing that Disney has always targeted younger viewers and no one else, one can only imagine how much editing will be done to the series. Plus, w/o some Disney fans not even knoing the original Naruto series, they can only get hopelessly lost in the story.
The bolded part is incorrect. Ever heard of Touchstone Pictures? Owned by Disney.
Also, Disney can do quite well, see the Ghibli movies that they were responsible for dubbing. Howl's Moving Castle was particularly well-dubbed, and Spirited Away was pretty decent.
In fact, the only Ghibli film dub that I have seen that was awful was Grave of the Fireflies, and that was not Disney, but Central Park Media.

1. Junjo Romantica
2. Code Geass
3. Mobile Suit Gundam
4. Gravitation
5. Neon Genesis Evangelion

Funny how your number one would be a story of gay love.

All of those five are essentially stories of gay love.

he actually gets shot? that was a joke. you're the one who spoiled it. GJ
Yes. [span style=\'color:#000000;background:#000000\']Envy shoots him. That wasn't what annoyed me about the Brotherhood take on it.
It was specifically his last words, which were changed from "Sorry, but I've got a wife and child to go home to", said before he was shot, before Envy even changed into Gracia's form to shoot him, to "Ugh, *splutter* damn... you *splutter*" after he was shot and dying on the ground.

For the record, the Manga's version had the former as Hughes' last words, not the latter.[/span]

The movie fixes the ending.

Brotherhood sort of messed up the FMA name.

Wait. WHAT.

You do understand that Brotherhood follows the manga, right? The actual, canon, sotryline? I can understand if you simply don't like it, but what you're saying here is quite impossible.
It's quite possible to 'follow' the original canon material and still screw it. See the afformentioned [span style=\'color:#000000;background:#000000\']Hughes death scene[/span].

Least favorite anime?

Gunslinger Girl, Lovely Complex, Girls Bravo, Naruto and FMA: Brotherhood were probably the anime that irked me the most.

you're completely, totally batshit insane!
Yes, I'm insane for even attempting to watch any of those, especially the first four.

How the hell can you not like the first two? Crazy person.

Oh, and Girls bravo is kind of random. I mean, I agree it's pretty bad, But it's like the only one you listed that's genuinely terrible.
Gunslinger Girl bored me with its atrocious pacing and Lovely Complex annoyed the crap out of me.

#1 - Fullmetal Alchemist: Now, I know I'm probably going to get flamed for ranking this as #1 when it is, admittedly, plagued by fanboyism and by some standards, somewhat melodrammatic in parts. However, I would argue that its ability to deliver a punchy, witty and humorous story and at the same time deliver some of the greatest impacts I've seen in an anime, such as [span style=\'color:#000000;background:#000000\']Hughes' death and Nina's end[/span], alongside its technical achievement (it was brilliantly animated for its time) ranks it as the greatest anime I have ever seen. It clocks in a bit long at around 50 episodes, but it is one of only two series that was able to keep my attention for a full 50 episodes (Higurashi being the other, which was technically two series).

I think it deserves praise. It'd be one of my favorites if not for the ending, Though Brotherhood will fix that little issue. It's been way better than the original series so far.
I hate Brotherhood with a passion due to their [span style=\'color:#000000;background:#000000\']mangling of Hughes' death scene[/span]. Both the manga and the original anime did it so much better.

The movie fixes the ending.
Somewhat. I was less impressed with the movie than with the series.

This, for the reason I mentioned above.

#5 - Grave of the Fireflies: Quite possibly the most emotionally devastating film ever made, I kid you not.
I've heard the effect is similar to watching Schindler's List, but I've not seen the latter, so I can't really comment first-hand.
I cried for the last 10-15 minutes of this film, through the entire credits and for 10-15 minutes afterward.

#4 - Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion: Excellent thrill-ride from start to finish. If you don't like plot-twists being thrown left, right and center, steer clear. If you enjoy a good Xanatos Roulette, you'll probably like this.

#3 - Higurashi no Naku Koro ni: Another great thrill-ride, but in a more down-to-earth setting of 1983 Hinamizawa. There are crowning moments of awesome in just about every arc, and then when the big reveal finally comes in the 2nd last arc of the 2nd series, it's one of those completely unexpected reveals. Great show, but you do have to perservere when you hit the inevitable 'WTF is this shit' moments on the way. This show is like a jigsaw puzzle slowly being pieced together. You can't see the whole picture until it's almost finished.

#2 - The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya: What can I say. This anime is the shit. Eccentric high-schoolers, a bibliophilic alien, a time travelling dojikko and an ESPer that could pass for gay all held together by one of the great snarkers of the animation medium, Kyon. I will say this: Watch it.

*drumroll*

Well, there are over 240 episodes of Bleach, and they change the OP and ED every so often.
The one you're talking about would be Asterisk by Orange Range.

and i like the opening of bleach!
Which one in particular? There are quite a few.

The two I found to be the best were Orange Range's "Asterisk" and UVERworld's "d-Technolife".

I like anime music, but it's far from the only thing I listen to.

Also, if you want anime music:

I believe I just won the thread, in terms of being able to find content.

For good measure, Nipponsei does some nice releases, but you can generally only get them via XDCC from their bots on Rizon.net IRC.
