also, keep in mind that if you train really hard you could end up in pain later on in your life, a lot. you can get in shape without that but the kind of training it takes to compete in athletics often carries the risk in and of itself, without the sport's risk, of fucking up your shit.

F MMA.  Boxing is a much better sport.  

I can tell you experience that hardcore training can cause long lasting pain.  I was an O-linemen in college, and there is not a day goes by I don't wake up in some sort of pain.  Finally 10 years later the constant aches have gone away, but there is still pain.  But, if you are only talking about the lifting and conditioning part of it, without the full contact training, you should be fine.

There is no talent in the heavyweight class right now.  There is just no one to challange Klitschko right now, so you get a lot of meaningless fights.  The coming Pacquiao vs Mayweather fight should be epic.

You don't magically grow fat.  The problem is, you need to be on a very high calorie diet to maintain the necessary training levels.  But, it is way easier to stop working out than it is to stop eating.  I used to have to eat until I was full, then eat something else a half an hour later just to keep from losing weight.  But the problem is, when you get used to eating like that, it's very hard to stop.  You can stop the training, but you need to make an even bigger effort to drop your caloric intake at the same time.

what kind of routine do you use?

Basically, it's based around explosiveness and conditioning. The conditioning part is a real bitch. I can lift all day if I have to, but the conditioning is way harder. I really, really don't know how to describe what I do unless I go into all the exercises, but that'd take a while.

what brought this on?

I feel it's something I'd enjoy and be good at. The job I have now (although some might look down on it) is actually pretty good and pays well. I work at In-N-Out burger. I'm not in management yet and I'm on track for finishing out the year making $30,000. Next year, if things go my way, I should be able to bump it up to $45k, then $60 the next year etc. Store managers average $100k+ a year and have opportunity to go on awesome trips if they run their stores well enough (last year, they took the Store Managers that hit all of their goals for the year to Switzerland).

So I'm not doing it because I have to, but because I think it'd be a good pasttime. I'm aware of the risks, I'm aware of the pain involved...but it gives me something to work towards. Even if I don't end up doing MMA, I'll at least be able to protect myself and my friends.

Also, I'm planning on training in Muay Thai and BJJ. Maybe throw in some other things later, but those are the two I want to focus in.

Boxing is about as technical as MMA. If you're looking for a technical fight, look to the lightweights up through the middleweight classes. Hell, you can even look to LHWs to deliver technical fights (see: Lyoto Machida vs anyone). Heavyweighs CAN be technical, but most of them are just beasts.

It's not fair to say that boxing is far more technical.  MMA fighters have to learn and be proficient in a multitude of training styles.  The great ones are both masters with their hands and legs, plus are top notch submission experts to boot.  MMA is not for thugs any more than boxing is and if you think that, then you just haven't given MMA a chance.  

I much prefer watching MMA over boxing because of the different styles that each fighter posses' and how their style matches up with their opponents.  You never know what is going to happen in a MMA in comparison to boxing.  

You may prefer boxing and probably always will.  I'm not trying to change your opinion, only to point out that to be a top notch MMA fighter you have to be very technical and most of the fans and fighters are not thugs.

Also, I forgot to tell you that's cool that you're training for this.  I have some friends that have done that as well and it was a blast going to their fights and cheering them on.  I think it's very cool that you're doing this.  Not only are you going to be in great shape but you'll be able to defend yourself so much better in a street situation as well.

You going to post your fights on Youtube so we can watch you choke a brotha out?

Sure if you want to get technical about defining technical, then yes you are right.  But, different styles only leads to 7 minutes of frustration followed by a 5 second tap out or haymaker knockout.  Sure there are the exceptions to this.

I've watched enough MMA to know that it's like boxing for NASCAR fans.

Also, back to Jenne, I'd say that MMA is closer to boxing on crack than boxing for NASCAR fans. Better yet, if Boxing is Chess, then MMA is Speed Chess. Both have the same essential goal, but in one, you have to be a lot more quick on your feet than the other.
